Akemashite Omedetogozaimasu!
Kate and I thoroughly enjoyed our first Japanese New Years, spent with our friends' family in the countryside. Highlights included pounding rice into traditional sticky mochi cakes with a gigantic hammer, visiting Buddhist and Shinto temples at midnight and drinking sweet sake with ginger, and eating sushi at an amazing restaurant that my friend's father has attended every day for the last thirty years. Serialized accounts of our adventures in the countryside will be posted over the next few days, with lots of pictures.

Dear Mike:
I worry about you and Kate. Are you getting enough to eat? You rarely mention food, and it would be a shame if you didn't get a shot at some of the traditional New Years treats so dear to Renee's heart:
spare ribs, borscht, matzah balls,
egg nog, stuff like that.
What are you doing for exercise? Both of you look fit.
Great that Eric had a chance to visit. He and Kate had quite a whirl in Hong Kong.
Love,
G.
